Over half of the patients who thought they needed to move out of their homes are able to stay in their homes with a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). Recent studies have found that disabilities stemming from chronic conditions (attributed to the aging process) are potentially preventable.
Some of the benefits of a CGA are:
- Reduced medical care and costs
- Improved physical and mental functioning
- Prolonged survival
- Improved diagnostic accuracy
- Recognition of risk factors for functional decline and accidental falls
- Improved independence in instrumental activities of daily living or IADL’s
- Reduced rate of hospital admissions
- Defining and achieving the patient’s goals within
the context of family and social support systems
